The Tiger Who Repaid a Kindness With Its Life — A Woodcutter Put His Bare Hand in a Tiger's Mouth

In the year the cows stopped coming home, a woodcutter named Dolsoe met an old tiger on a mountain slope — a tiger with a bone stuck in its throat.

He had time to run. Instead, he wrapped a rag around his hand and put it into the tiger's mouth.
The jaws that could have bitten down did not.

After that, rabbits and deer were left on the mountain path. Dolsoe would not take them.
In the village, livestock went missing, a man was hurt, and the county office put a bounty on the tiger.

On the last morning, the old tiger walked out of the reeds.
Three steps back and the reeds would have hidden it. It did not go back.

Stories of a tiger repaying a kindness are told in many versions across Korea. In one of them, the tiger even shows its rescuer how to catch it, so that he can collect the reward.
This 89-minute story is a new telling built on that version. It asks whether a debt should be paid with a life — and who it was that put a price on it.

When the woodcutter took the reward, he asked the magistrate for one thing: not to write down that the tiger had hurt anyone, because no one knew that yet.
“Only write down what we actually know.”

Narrated in Korean, with Korean subtitles.
