The Siblings' Contest — A Mother Fed Her Daughter Red-Bean Porridge

On the hillside there is a fortress wall that was never finished.

At the very top, one stone-shaped gap is still empty.

"The Siblings' Contest" survives at ruined fortresses all across Korea.

It is usually told as a trial of strength: a brother and sister competed,

and the sister lost.

She did lose. But why did she lose?

Not for want of strength. Not for being slow.

She lost because she could not leave her mother's porridge unfinished.

That child obeyed her mother to the very end.

The most frightening line in this story is not "die."

It is: "Take just one spoonful before you go."

The mother meant to save her son, and she did.

But that son became nothing at all.

His strength did not vanish — he simply lost the will to use it,

believing his sister had died because of it.

The one she tried to save did not live either.

The wall is still there. One stone's place at the top is still empty.

The brother never laid that stone.

If he laid it, he said, it would no longer be what his sister built.
